The European Commission wants to have the power to monitor and sanction the automotive sector, after the Volkswagen scandal.

The European Commission proposed on Wednesday a major revision of the approval procedures for motor vehicles in the European Union, that will give Brussels powers of surveillance and sanction, in order to cover some of the deficiencies brought to light by the scandal of the Volkswagen motors rigged, AFP informs.

According AGERPRES, under current rules, only the national authorities are responsible for certifying that a vehicle meets all the requirements to be placed on the market and for the supervision of the conformity of the producers with EU legislation.

Today's proposals will give a more independent character to the test procedures of vehicles and will strengthen the supervision of vehicles already in circulation.
A broader surveillance at European level will enhance the overall system.
