Online games see 20 percent growth in 2012

The market for online games in Romania has grown by 20 percent in 2012 from 2011, being one of the economic sectors with strong positive dynamics, according to a ProfitInfo.ro press release published recently.

'Apparently, Romanians are seeking quality and the technical support provided by the producer increasingly more, which is accessible only in the case of an original version. Moreover, we believe that the continuous development of the Internet has also increased the number of games that have an online multiplayer component. And since playing together or against other people is the most interesting, the number of those who want to have access to multiplayer has increased, as well,' said Edi Tecsan, project manager at online shop Gamesline.ro.

Additionally, the high number of free-to-play games had an important contribution to the 'financial' education of Romanian players.

Edi Tecsan's personal bet is that 2013 will be also a growth year, but the advance may not be as spectacular as in 2012.

In terms of the interest's trend, 2012 has been the year of PC games. Compared with previous years, when the games for consoles struggled to gain the gamers' confidence, this year the PS3 and XBOX 360 games follow the level of PC games' sales at a very small distance. However, in 2013, innovations are expected from Microsoft, from Sony for XBOX and PlayStation respectively, and thus the interest in the platforms dedicated to video games may sharply return.

The data collected by GamesLine.ro show that the Romanian gamer is aged 13 - 21 and mainly prefers games such as RPG or shooter. Thus, the best-selling games in 2012 are FIFA 13 (football), Diablo III (RPG with online elements), Guild Wars 2 (exclusively online RPG) and the Assassin's Creed series (RPG).
