The Atego already occupied the top rank as regards quality, reliability, repair and maintenance costs, and durability. This position will now be strengthened thanks to an entirely new drive system and numerous innovations in the chassis and cab.
A total of seven new Euro VI engine variants, which can be combined with a broad range of manual and automatic transmissions, enable the Atego to be precisely adapted to the specific requirement profiles of a wide variety of short-radius distribution applications.
In order to conform to the upcoming Euro VI emissions standard, the new Atego is available in four newly designed BlueTec 6 four-cylinder engines from the OM 934 model series with a displacement of 5.1 l. The four-valve engines with two overhead camshafts featuring adjustable valve timing perfectly cover the performance range 115 kW (156 hp) to 170 kW (231 hp) in short-radius distribution. As additional engine options for the new Atego Euro VI there are three newly designed six-cylinder OM 936 engines with a performance range from 175 kW (238 hp) to 220 kW (299 hp) and 7.7 l displacement. The especially high-torque Euro VI engines consume up to five percent less fuel whilst in some cases benefitting from considerably longer maintenance intervals, which are determined using the new dynamic maintenance calculator. These engines conform to the upcoming emissions standard, using Common Rail technology and cooled exhaust gas recirculation as well as an exhaust box with an integrated SCR system and closed particulate filter. As already familiar from the heavy-duty model series, the new Atego also boasts the FleetBoard EcoSupport concept to increase economy yet further.
New equipment ranging from new transmissions to safety systems
The driving force of the new engines is transmitted via automated gearboxes with either six or eight gears. The newly introduced Mercedes PowerShift 3 eight-speed transmission offers an exclusive optimisation of the drive configuration. Optionally, the manual transmission with power-assisted gear shifting and six or nine speeds can also be ordered for the new Atego if desired. The drive system design of the new Atego includes integrated Stability Control Assist – known as ESP for passenger cars - as standard. A newly designed two-stage high-performance engine brake combined with powerful disc brakes on all axles ensures a maximum level of driving safety. And exclusive to Mercedes-Benz in this application category, the new Atego is fitted ex works with a permanent magnet retarder which is wear-free and provides powerful support to the overall braking system.
The new Atego fits neatly in to the parade of the new Actros, Antos and Arocs model series
By introducing the new Atego, a lightweight short-radius distribution truck in the 6.5 t to 16 t GVWR segment, Mercedes-Benz has now completed the new truck generation. With its cab design, the new Atego fits in neatly with the new Mercedes-Benz model series. A newly designed bumper with integrated daytime running lamps, optionally available in an LED version, marks the characteristic face of the Atego which, for all its individuality, immediately makes it stand out as a member of the modern Mercedes-Benz truck family.
The new Atego will have its premiere in April 2013 at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham and at the Bauma Trade Fair in Munich. Sales of the new star of lightweight short-range distribution start from 1 May 2013.
