The inhabitants of the Danube Delta have access to 5G connectivity for the first time, offered by Orange Romania through the 5G Connect Danube Delta (5G-CDD) project.
The technology was officially activated in several areas of the Delta on the occasion of the Ivan Patzaichin International Canoe Marathon, organized by the Ivan Patzaichin-Mila 23 Association. In order to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants, efforts were also started in the four main areas of interest: digital education, telemedicine, slow tourism and environmental monitoring. The project has thus entered its active phase, starting in 2024 and lasting a total of 3 years, with funding from the European Commission. The most important component is education: children in the area have more educational opportunities, choose in greater numbers to continue their studies and are encouraged to return to the community, to contribute to local well-being.
The technology provided by Orange for the first time is 5G Standalone (5G SA), which means that it operates independently of the pre-existing 4G network.
