Bucharest Underground H1 ridership figure at 89,3 mln

The Bucharest Underground carried in the first half of the year 89.384 ml passengers, averaging 1,291,677,000 riders per km of tunnel, show statistics of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. Last year, 170.525 passengers traveled by this rapid transit system. The Bucharest Underground marked earlier this week 33 years since the commissioning, on Nov. 19, 1979, of the first network section between the Semanatoarea - Timpuri Noi neighborhoods.

The Bucharest Underground network has a total length of 70 kilometers, divided into four mainlines, with 51 stations and three depots.Although it covers only 3.7 percent of the entire length of the capital city's public transport network, the Underground carries on average between 20 and 25 percent of the total number of passengers who use public transport services.

Throughout its history, the Underground carried over 4.4 billion passengers. The current Underground scheme is structured by four mainlines totaling nearly 70 km of double track and 51 stations; the Bucharest Underground ranks in the first half of the world's most developed and modern such networks; over 700,000 passengers use the company's services on an average working day.

In the near horizon Mainline 4 will be extended by another two stations: Laminorului and Straulesti Lake (north of the capital) and then the North Railway Station - Progresul Station (along the city's north-south axis) section will add to the plan sometime in the future.

Next come Mainline 5 (Drumul Taberei - University - Pantelimon), Mainline 6 on the west to east axis, the connection of the Bucharest Municipality with the ‘Henri Coanda' Otopeni Airport on the route North Station - 1 Mai - ‘Henri Coanda' Airport (north), and Mainline 7 (Bragadiru - Rahova - Unirii Plaza - Mosilor - Obor - Colentina - Voluntari , linking the city's south-western to the eastern neighborhoods).

Underground network operator Metrorex estimated that the total length of the network will reach about 160 km double track, and the passengers to use this mass transit means will account for over 50 pct of the total number of public transport passengers in Bucharest.
