The European Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is to be simplified, according to the recent initiative of the European Commission (Omnibus package), with the aim of reducing the administrative burden for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and occasional importers. The initiative proposes simpler procedures for declaring emissions embodied in products covered by the mechanism, more relaxed reporting deadlines for operations with CBAM certificates, but also circumstances for reducing penalties. However, 2026 remains the year in which the carbon tax starts to be paid.
