General Motors now ranks first among automakers in the world

General Motors (GM) sold in the second quarter more cars than its Japanese rival Toyota, taking over the position as the largest automaker in the world and highlighting the return of American industry after extensive restructuring measures in recent years

Thus, GM sold in the second quarter 2.49 million cars, followed by Toyota with 2.48 million units and Volkswagen, with 2.39 million, according to Bloomberg, quoted by Mediafax.

GM and Ford Motor Co. have announced in recent days their financial results, above market expectations for the second quarter, while Toyota has reported declining sales, reflecting reduced demand from Japan.

In the first half of the year, Toyota has managed to preserve its leading position, with 4.91 million vehicles sold, followed by GM with 4.85 million and Volkswagen with 4.7 million, according to data presented by the companies.
