'Capping loans in foreign exchange is a good thing on a system level. It is hard to imagine on short term if the interest rates in lei loans drop. We must see which the pressure on inflation, on exchange rates, will be. In such conditions, I do not expect a markdown in loans in lei. We have a very high level of uncertainty and I believe that at least in the coming year we cannot expect a significant move,' Groningen explained. He pointed out that in Romania would follow a period of consolidation of the banking system, but it would not be about a monopoly, the future being reserved for a small number of universal banks.
' In Romania we expect a process of consolidation of the banking system and I do not believe that we can talk about a monopoly, it is easy avoiding. We do not need very many players, either, as this means a lack of efficiency. A balance must be found. Certainly, we have a few large banks, but I believe the future is to have maximum 3-4 universal banks and probably a handful of specialized banks,' the CIS Chairman said.
