The National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics (ICI), with a time-honoured tradition and over 30 years of active presence on the Romanian IT market, represents the leading Romanian research-development and innovation centre in Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Profile of the Institute: In order to accomplish the institute's aims, ICI's experts carry out the following activities: - advanced and applied research within national, as well as European, research & development programmes; - technological transfer of the research results in the IT and data communications field; - high performance computer networking - development, implementation and service providing; - system integration for large-scale projects developed in the fields of companies' and public services' computer networking; - consulting in computer science and management (feasibility, diagnosis and prognosis studies, networking projects, elaboration of technical specifications for tenders, upgrading studies, etc.); - providing "turn-key" systems tailored to meet clients' requirements; - software development for application packages, designed on a structure with a very general application spectrum; - assessment of software solutions, projects and information systems, standardisation in IT field; - technical assistance; - structuring of the research results, information and documentation in informatics field. International Openness and Cooperation: Starting 1993, ICI has been involved, within the EC-PECO, COPERNICUS, SAVE, IST and ESPRIT programmes, in over 40 European research works (projects, excellence networks, working groups). ICI - as National Computer Network Operator for Research & Development (RNC): RNC was developed as a national project by creating a technical and organising infrastructure for domestic and international electronic services, meant for the Romanian research community (exchange of information between the Romanian and foreign research communities; access to the national and international technical and scientific data bases; support for information, documentation and technical & scientific cooperation). Through RNC, ICI provides the following types of services and servers: - Domain Name Servers - ICI is the technical administrator of the ".ro" TLD (Top-Level Domain); - file server/FTP archives; - web service; - e-mail service; - mailing lists. INFOSOC programme: In 2001, our institute won the tender for coordinating the national programme for research & development and innovation "INFOSOC - The Information Organisation". Digital Library: In September 2001, under the patronage of the Ministry for Communications and Information Technology, ICI opened the first electronic library providing any individual with access to electronic books, as well as to information regarding software products offered by domestic and foreign providers.
