Fooled by the hype: Is it the next big thing or merely a shiny new object?

Everyone is looking for the next hit on the market, whether it's technology, a new management method or the latest approach to human resources.

 In an economy of the moment "now" that seems to accelerate more and more, organizations feel pressed to respond to the changing demands of customers, to reinvent themselves and to evolve frequently but also to defeat at any price the competition by being the first to offer faster, better and more attractive solutions.

Concepts and fashionable products tell us something, but they do not tell us everything. When it comes to innovation, popularity should be just one of the factors to be taken into account in a wider process of decision-making.


Some of the considerations to be taken into account by business leaders when assessing an innovation:

 

  • Use an adoption planning and control tool
  • Better knowledge of the organization - and its tolerance to risk
  • Better understanding of success and better management of expectations
  • It is rarely necessary for decisions to be binary or immediate
