The Coca-Cola System`s socio-economic impact in Romania: growth by more than 20% in 2021

Main indicators related to the entire value chain: €519 million value added, €229 million in taxes paid to the state budget and 18,800 jobs

In 2021, the activity of The Coca-Cola System – composed of Coca-Cola Romania and Coca-Cola HBC Romania – generated an added value in the local economy of €519 million, more than 20% higher compared to the previous year, across the entire value chain. At the same time, The Coca-Cola System directly and indirectly supports 18,800 jobs. These and other growing indicators are presented in the Coca-Cola System's latest and seventh Socio-Economic Impact Study, which shows how its business contributes to the local economy and creates opportunities for growth.

Present in Romania for 31 years, The Coca-Cola System operates through two partner companies with complementary activities, ensuring a diverse portfolio of beverages on the local market. The Coca-Cola Company Romania, a subsidiary of The Coca-Cola Company, is responsible for the implementation of marketing strategies, brand management, packaging strategy, consumer promotion, advertising, public relations, and market research. Coca-Cola HBC Romania, part of the Coca-Cola HBC Group and the leader of the local beverage industry, is the bottling company for the beverages of the joint portfolio, in its three plants in Ploiesti, Timisoara and Poiana Negrii, and provides distribution, sales and operational marketing for Coca-Cola products.

Growing contribution to the Romanian economy

The Coca-Cola System's business in Romania includes numerous stakeholders along the value chain, from farmers who supply ingredients for products, suppliers of labels, raw materials and packaging, technology and equipment, consulting, and advertising firms, to carriers, distributors and retail partners. 85% of the Coca-Cola System's suppliers are Romanian companies. The Coca-Cola System has 83,000 customers in modern, traditional and HoReCa trade. The Coca-Cola System and its partner companies pay wages, taxes, employ labor, invest in communities, and create added value for the local economy.

• In 2021, the value added supported by the Coca-Cola System's value chain in the Romanian economy was €519 MIL (equivalent to 0.22% of GDP), up 20% from the previous year.

The direct contribution through wages and taxes paid, by the Coca-Cola System in Romania, was €80 MIL.

• In 2021, Romanians bought products from the Coca-Cola System portfolio worth 885 million euros. Of every euro spent on these, 59 cents remain in the local economy, compared to 56 cents in 2020.

In 2021, investments in production capacity development, local operations, and equipment acquisitions of the Coca-Cola System in Romania amounted to €37,5 MIL. The plants in Ploiesti, Timisoara and Poiana Negrii are regional hubs of innovation and production, exporting to 14 other countries.

More revenue for the state budget

Taxes paid in 2021 to the state budget represent the largest component of the value added supported by the Coca-Cola System value chain in Romania (€ 229 MIL). 

The value of taxes paid directly by the Coca-Cola System amounted to €39 MIL.

The indirect contribution, through taxes paid by suppliers, partners, and their suppliers, amounted to € 190 MIL

More jobs supported in 2021

In 2021, the Coca-Cola Romania and Coca-Cola HBC Romania teams employed a total of 1,529 people. However, the business of The Coca-Cola System supports a larger number of jobs, respectively 18,800 jobs in industries as diverse as manufacturing, services and transportation across the value chain.

18,800 jobs generated directly and indirectly by the Coca-Cola System equates to 0.24% of total employees in Romania, compared to 0.20% in 2020.

• The number of jobs indirectly supported by the Coca-Cola System in Romania is 17,271.

• Each Coca-Cola System job supports 11 other jobs in Romania.
